Whey protein is known as a fast absorbing protein with a good amino acid profile and it is derived from cows milk, but most whey today is even suitable if you are lactose intolerant which is a plus. Their are different forms of whey like whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. I have great results with whey protein isolate or a blend of different forms of whey protein, but most any whey is better than none if you need protein during certain times of the day. When is the best time to take whey protein? Whey should be taken within an hour after your workout to start the muscle recovery process from your training session. Another good time to take whey is first thing in the morning when you wake up to give your body a source of protein sense you slept for hours without having any protein.
A good amount of this fast absorbing protein to consume per serving especially after training would be anywhere from 20 grams to up to 60 grams. Some sources say the standard amount of protein you can absorb at one time is 30 grams, but from my experience I have had good recovery with up to 60 grams depending on the brand of protein and how hard and long my workout was. The main thing you need to remember is that everybody is different and just because one person may just need 20 grams or protein, that does not mean you can recover as well from the same amount. Listen to your body and try different dosages to see which recovers your body the best.
Milk Whey
Whey is also a good addition to fruit smoothies or most any health conscious blended drink. See what works best for your taste and nutritional needs and blend it up. Even though this protein is considered fast absorbing it can also be taken at other times during the day if you desire, but keep in mind when some of the best times to take whey are, which is in the morning and after training, and if you need a quick pick me up before training 20 grams of whey works well also. Another good time to take whey is when you are feeling hungry before your next big meal, it will help curve your appetite and help prevent over eating.
