Whey is one of the two major proteins found in milk, the other being casein (pronounced kay-seen). Chances are that you first heard about whey in the nursery rhyme about Little Miss Muffet, who sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey.
If you want to use it as a muscle building supplement, but you're worried about whey protein side effects, there's very little reason to be concerned. Studies show that whey protein is well tolerated by the vast majority of people.
Milk Whey
To understand why, it helps to know a little about where whey protein actually comes from.
Whey is extracted from milk and cheese using a variety of methods, the aim of which is to "strip away" most of the carbohydrate and fat without damaging the protein.
In other words, you can think of whey as milk with most of the carbohydrate, fat and casein removed. It's simply a very concentrated source of protein. That's why it's one of the most popular muscle building supplements out there.
Did you know that...
In a typical serving of whey, you get roughly the same amount of protein (20-25 grams) as you get from a chicken breast. Whey is often known as a "fast" protein for its ability to provide amino acids to muscles more quickly than some other protein sources (i.e. casein). Whey contains high levels of essential amino acids and BCAAs, both of which are important when it comes to fuelling muscle growth. Whey is also naturally high in the amino acid leucine, which has been identified by researchers as a key amino acid when it comes to triggering protein synthesis.
Because whey is a natural product derived from milk, there are no major whey protein side effects. However, people who are allergic to dairy products could react to whey protein and should avoid it. Whey will also contain a very small amount of lactose, and may be unsuitable for anyone with a lactose intolerance.
Often, this is because they're deficient in an enzyme called lactase, which helps to break down the lactose (a type of sugar) in milk. Common symptoms include nausea, cramps, bloating, gas, and diarrhea, which begin about 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating or drinking milk.
However, most people who want to use it as a muscle building supplement will not suffer any side effects when using whey protein.
